About Doug Yates
After almost a dozen years as a classroom English teacher, Doug Yates moved to South Carolina to run the Writing Center at The Citadel in Charleston. There he managed all of the writing tutors and worked closely with several academic departments to ensure cadets received high-level supplementary writing support. After several years at the storied military institute, he launched Yates Writing Consulting.
From years of helping friends on an informal basis apply to business schools, Yates fashioned a system for approaching the difficult application essay. His time working at a selective editing house as everything from a line editor to a ghostwriter gave Yates the necessary experience to feel comfortable offering this work independently at the highest level. Finally, Yates found he could never stray too far from a classroom, building professional development workshops and seminars on writing so he could stay in front of people.
Yates graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Lehigh University with a BA in English. He received an MA with distinction from the University of Nottingham. A former college football player, Yates now calms his nerves by making loud music on a set of pre-World War II bagpipes. After dealing with snow and ice for most of his life, he is still getting used to the punishing heat of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, where he lives with his wife and two boys.
